The Midewiwin is the Grand Medicine Society of the Ojibwe. Through its sacred medicine practices, the health of individuals and the community are maintained. Since the world of the Midewiwin is intertwined with the spiritual realm, spirits are constantly attracted to their ceremonies. Thus, the Healers of the Lodges sometimes place spiritual guardians, known as “Manitoukinac”, near their lodges and dwellings to ward-off dangerous spirits. Good and helpful spirits, such as the Horned Serpent, are welcomed.
In this picture we see two large Manitoukinac standing at the doorways of a lodge, each with an eye vigilantly watching for evil.
